Barocchi: computer science for the study of historical and artistic sources

A cutting-edge project dedicated to a pioneer in the digitization of ancient texts. Italian art historian and academic of the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, Paola Barocchi began in 1980 to bring IT into her art history studies, founding what is now the Centro di Ricerche Informatiche per i Beni Culturali. On the anniversary of her passing, we presented a website and a platform for the digital consultation of works and dictionaries that Barocchi and her collaborators had cataloged and digitized over the years.

The Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa contacted us to develop an advanced consultation system of the art-historical sources digitized by Paola Barocchi.

We did it through a skeuomorphic interface of works and dictionaries.

To develop the platform, we digitally reconstructed the structure of the ancient books contained in the Barocchi corpus.

For the front end of the platform we used the Angular framework. The back end includes a custom search engine based on Lucene and eXistDB. This project made possible advanced searches that were unthinkable until then.
