Math Guru: learn math from your mistakes
Math Guru is the first educational app that spots your math learning gaps and helps you overcome them. Free for iOS and Android, Math Guru is dedicated to students in their first two years of high school but can also be helpful for anyone who wants to improve their knowledge of algebra and geometry. Math Guru won as the best educational app in the “APPrendere” contest held by Upgrade. It was presented at the 32nd conference on mathematics education, gaining acclaim from the more than 200 teachers attending. Selected by Tom’s Hardware magazine as app of the week, Math Guru was among the best new apps on the App Store and received more than 15.000 downloads in the first seven days.
We developed Math Guru at the hackathon held by Toscana Area Giovani in 2015 to fight school dropout, particularly high during the first two years of high school.
To develop an educational app to fight the school dropout phenomenon, we began with one fact: about 43% of students were failing math.
We then developed our app based on an artificial intelligence algorithm that can identify in a few questions the topics in which the student is least prepared. Afterward, the app can help them overcome the learning gaps through goal-driven courses, questions, and online resources, such as lessons on Youtube. All this with an intuitive interface, attractive graphic design, and the possibility to share your progress with friends and followers: an overall pleasant and engaging user experience.
